My gross pay is about £45,000 as a post doctoral researcher 3 years after finishing my PhD, which comes out to around £2700 a month net. That’s after doing the 4 years on a stipend during the PhD though which was much lower, €1500 (about £1250 currently) for most of the 4 years, so if you’re thinking about salary in a future career you should also think about how long the training period is and if/how much you get paid during that. Also think about where you need to be during the training. I did my PhD in Dublin which is quite an expensive place to live, so my rent was about 40% of my monthly income and I was lucky; I knew plenty of people I worked with paying more than that.
My gross pay is about £60,000 as a senior technical manager in a food company. It will take a while to become a senior technical manager so the starting salary will be lower than this
I’m a PhD student on a scholarship. I receive £15,000 tax-free, which comes out to £1,250/month. I can work extra to top this up, and the scholarship pays for my tuition fee of £28,000+ a year.
