Einstein’s theory of relativity tells us that Space and time are distorted by the mass of objects.
Very massive objects, like the Sun, cause very large disruptions. Any smaller body, passing nearby will be moved in a certain direction.
All of the Stars and Planets are following complicated paths around one another because of Space Time distortion. When an asteroid enters our Solar system, its path is controlled by the presence of the planets. When the conditions are just right, an asteroid starts to fall towards Earth. Many are destroyed on entering the atmosphere. Some survive and hit the surface with enormous energy.
