I finished my PhD almost 3 years ago, so I guess what I’m doing now is my plan for after I finish! I continued on in research, though I’ve shifted topic a bit from basic research in animal genomes to virus evolution and software for virus surveillance.

I finished my PhD a while ago, but, when I did finish I got a temporary job called a Post Doc (although I think they call it a PDRA here – post-doctoral research assistant). Essentially, it’s a temporary post where you are still working with a senior scientist but more independently than you did as a PhD student.

My plan was never to go into academia and work at a university. I always wanted to do something practical in my work. So, I went from the Post Doc to working as a marine modeller for the Met Office here in the UK (along with forecasting weather, they have a big ocean modelling group) and, finally, found my perfect job at the Environment Agency.
