I love that I just don’t know what is going to happen in an experiment – we make predictions based on what is known already, but so often biology surprises us, so every day I get to test out a new theory and find out if its right or wrong.
I enjoy the sheer variety of things I get to do. I’d say most exciting is the knowledge that no matter what my result is, I’ll get to help people trying to protect willows in Scotland. My results will help tell them what the best thing is to do to keep the willows healthy.
I find the unpredictability of biology pretty exciting! Even if you think going into an experiment that you’re answering an easy question it can often surprise you and turn out to be 3 or 4 sub-questions that need to be answered. Science more broadly can be very surprising too – you never know when a new technology or discovery is going to change the game.
