If you want to be a scientist and everyone around you is saying ‘nah’, here’s my advice: Be more stubborn than their doubt.
Your support system might look different, and that’s okay. Here’s what actually matters:
1. Resources you CAN control:
• Internet (hello, free online courses!)
• Public libraries
• YouTube science channels
• Open source research papers
• Community college classes
• Local science clubs/groups
2. Practical survival skills:
• Learn to be your own biggest cheerleader
• Find online communities of people who get excited about science
• Don’t wait for permission to be curious
• Practice explaining complex ideas simply
• Build skills incrementally
3. The most important thing? Don’t let anyone tell you science is only for ‘certain’ people. Science is for curious humans who ask ‘why’ and aren’t afraid to figure stuff out.
I started as a kid taking apart household electronics (sorry, Mum!) with zero fancy equipment. Your circumstances don’t define your potential – your curiosity does.
Pro tip: Scholarships, online resources, and determination can overcome almost any initial barrier. The universe is waiting for your questions!
Keep asking ‘why’. Always. And know that your people are out there, and you WILL find them. 💪✨
