My Work:
I have worked in Clinical Research for over 15 years since leaving University. I previously worked in medical devices (hip, knee and other joint replacement) and I currently work in pharmaceuticals on a rare disease study.
-
My Typical Day:
I start my day with any emails that may have come in overnight (I work on a global study so nothing ever stops). I then start my calls with the team team members in the local countries that I manage for the study. I have other calls throughout the day with different team members and external partners who help run the study. I review data and sort out issues that may have come up at the different hospitals we work with. I finish my day at about 4.30 when I need to collect the children.
-
What I'd do with the prize money:
I would use it to help run a STEM event in the local area with local schools and youth groups.
-
Education:
I went to Gartree Secondary School, where I did my GCSEs.
I then moved to college (my school only went up to GCSE level) to do my A levels in Biology, Chemistry and Geography (also General studies AS Level).
I then did a degree in Biomedical Science, which included a placement in a hospital Immunology Lab.

Qualifications:
GCSEs
AS Levels
A Levels
BSc in Biomedical Science

Work History:
During University I worked in a bar and restaurant which did help me to work on my communication skills that I have used since.
Once I had finished University I then got a job as a Graduate Clinical Research Associate for a Medical Device Company – I learned all about clinical research in this job and did a lot of travelling to hospitals to review study documents and records (called monitoring). I also completed submissions to get approvals for new studies and learned about the development of medical devices.
I then continued to move into more senior roles in clinical research and work on different studies in different areas.
-
Current Job:
More recently I have taken a job as a Senior Clinical Research Manager in a pharmaceutical company and I work managing a global study on a rare disease. Its is a very complicated study and involves over 50 countries so I have to work well with the team that all collaborate on the study to make it a success.
