I split my time equally working in the NHS training to be a colorectal (intestinal/bowel) surgeon and the other half of my time doing research in the laboratory on bowel cancer samples from people who have had surgery for bowel cancer. Here is a link to learn a bit more about me Getting to know… Dr Meera Patel – Bowel Research UK :Bowel Research UK
Bowel cancer can spread to certain parts of the body including something called the peritoneum which is like a cling-film that covers the internal abdominal organs. My research focuses on this area because we don’t really understand why or how bowel cancer spreads to the peritoneum.

My pronouns are:

-
My Work:
I am a surgeon who is also a scientist researching the spread of bowel cancer
-
My Typical Day:
Surgeons start the working day at 8am so if I am working in the hospital I wake up at 06:30 and drive to work. At the hospital I may be seeing patients in the outpatient department and talking to them about the operation they need, I could be seeing patients on the ward after their operation or I could be in the operating theatre performing operations. Every day is different so it can be very interesting.
On a day where I am researching I could be in the lab performing experiments, working at my computer analysing results or in meetings discussing research ideas.
