      What a great question.

I think working with patients has allowed me to develop portable software skills. These are the skills that you work on that you can apply in any other job you do. The mains ones for me have been:
      • Communication skills. This one is a biggie, you need to be able to explain to colleagues what tasks you’ve completed and what still needs finishing. It’s also important if you need to explain any problems or issues that have come up during your shift
      • Prioritising my workload so I can deal with urgent cases quickly. Being able to do this means that I can manage my whole workload without it having a negative affect on any of the patients.
      • Working in a team. As much as I enjoy working on my own and can finish all the jobs I’m meant to, it’s really important that I can work well with others. Being part of the NHS means that you’re part of a huge team, working with other people you may never meet, all to look after patients.

My goal is to work in the engagement team with the National Pathology Programme in Wales. I’m sure all the skills I’m learning will help me with this, along with meeting the right people.
