About Me:
I live in Glasgow although I’m originally from north-east Wales. I teach at a university π on lots of different topics, but my favourite is animal welfare and behaviour πππΏπ¦. When I’m not teaching, I like spending time in the mountains π, running, riding my bike or dipping in Scotland’s beautiful lochs (or lakes).

My Work:
I’m a University lecturer, which is basically a teacher at a University, but as well as teaching I get to spend time doing research, which I love. Research involves asking questions about different things, coming up with a plan to investigate the questions and (hopefully) finding out the answers.

In my research, I’m really interested in how different animals are coping with climate change through changing their behaviour, and whether or not this is helping them to adapt. During my PhD studies I worked on dormice, which are super cute and are an endangered species here in the UK, and I’ve also worked on ground squirrels in Canada (like the squirrels we have in the UK, but they don’t climb trees!) – basically I really like small, furry animals :). I’m also really interested in hibernation (where animals sleep for the whole winter) – it’s a fascinating process that we don’t completely know how it works!
In my teaching, I like teaching animal behaviour and animal welfare, with a particular focus on wild animals – why do wild animals act the way they do, and how can we make sure that our actions aren’t harming them. There’s lots of questions that are still to be answered in these fields, which make them a really exciting field to be working in!

My Typical Day:
I usually go to the office for around 9am, and if the weather is good I’ll ride my bike there down the canal – it’s a nice way to get some fresh air first thing in the morning! My days are really varied, which is great, and our working hours are quite flexible – so if the weather is really nice then I might finish a little early to go out for a run or on my bike, and then make up the time on a day when it’s raining (lots of those here in Scotland!)., but usually I finish around 5pm.

My days change a lot depending on my teaching schedule – it’s very different to teaching in schools, as students will focus on one or two topics only for a few weeks, but have lots of classes on that topic and work to do for it. When I’m teaching, I will teach for several hours in the morning,Β and then mark some of the assignments our students have to turn in regularly to check that they are understanding what we are teaching them. There are often research talks at lunchtime, so I often go to one of those to find out what exciting research other people in the University are doing. In the afternoons I often have meetings with students, and work on my research a bit before heading home around 5pm.

Education:
I went to high school in a small town called Mold in north-east Wales, then to University in Sheffield to study biology. I studied here for 4 years, finishing in 2011, then had a big break in education before going back to the University of Lancaster to study for my PhD in 2018.

Qualifications:
11 GCSEs
4 AS-levels
3 A-levels (biology, chemistry and german)
Master of Biological Science in biology (a 4 year undergraduate degree where you come out with an MBiolSci rather than doing a Bachelor’s degree then a separate Master’s degree)
PhD in biology

Work History:
In high school and some University holidays, I worked as a waitress; I’ve also worked as a cleaner and in factories during the University holidays so that I could afford to volunteer as a research assistant in the University labs for the rest of the holidays. After university, I worked as a technician in research labs for a couple of years, working on projects studying insects, and as a field assistant studying ground squirrels in Canada. I then worked in retail, mostly in outdoor shops (selling walking boots and waterproof coats) for several years, before deciding to go back to university and study for my PhD.

If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!
1. My socks would always feel brand new and fluffy (I have very cold feet!). 2. A permanent, unlimited source of funding for my research. 3. Eat all the cinnamon buns I want without getting unhealthy
Tell us a joke.
A man walks into a library and asks for a book on turtles. "Hardback?" says the librarian. "Yeah, and little heads" answers the man
