To become a scientist you need to have completed a Science degree which usually takes 3 years at University. However, if you want to lead your own research you will need to complete a master’s degree that usually takes 1-2 year and PhD that usually takes 4 years. However, a lot of people take breaks in between.

You can go to university for 3 years for a degree, up to a PhD so it could be up to 7-8 years in total. It’s important to know it’s not the only route in… you could always go down the internship/apprentice route: https://www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship
I know that for biomedical science for example, the nhs has a good apprenticeship scheme. Once in a job, your training will probably be paid for and you are learning relevant skills in the job.
      Good luck!
