Dogs are able to hear sounds which humans can’t hear because the cells within their ears are sensitive to sounds at different frequencies (low and high) compared to the frequencies which human ear cells are sensitive to. If you study physics you can measure the frequency of different sounds as well as the amplitude (how loud or quiet they are). There are other animals whose ears are designed to work in different environments – for example some marine mammals which can hear sounds at very long distances in the ocean or animals which hunt at night and use their hearing to catch prey because they can’t rely on being able to see their prey in the dark.
