About Me:
I’m a PhD student living in Edinburgh. I love running, playing squash, and racing in my university go karting team 🏎️

I’m a huge fan of Formula 1 and love watching all the races throughout the season, no matter how early I have to get up for them. I also like trying out my racing skills by racing on track in my university go karting team: we race against other universities all across the country in go karts that travel up to 80 mph!
My squash skills aren’t so good but I’m slowly learning, and I’m training for my first half marathon in February 2025. I want to do a marathon sometime in 2026!🏃
I also love learning languages – I’m currently trying to learn Greenlandic because a lot of my work is based around Greenland 🇬🇱

My Work:
I use computers to understand how quickly icebergs around Greenland will melt in the future. This helps us understand how quickly sea levels will rise. 🧊

I use computer models to simulate how water flows around icebergs and how these icebergs melt. This involves writing code which describes the physics of how liquids flow (“fluid dynamics”) and how ice melts (“thermodynamics”). From these simulations, we can figure out how quickly these icebergs will melt in the future as the climate gets warmer. However, these simulations take a long time to run 💻
I am trying to create a new, simple equation which describes how icebergs melt. Other scientists could then use this simple equation and apply it across the whole world to figure out exactly how much sea levels will rise in the future. This is important to protect people across the world from climate change 🌍

My Typical Day:
I am definitely not a morning person! I usually lie in bed until at least 9am. I try to get into the office by 10am, where I run some simulations on the computer and analyse the results. After lunch I’ll get the bus to the other side of Edinburgh where I teach maths and physics to undergraduates at the university. I usually leave at around 5:30pm.

Every day is very different – some days might have more or less teaching, or meetings about my research or some other projects I’m involved with. That’s what I love about doing a PhD – no two days are the same! When I leave I might have a squash or tennis match in the evening, and then when I get home I like spending an hour or so playing the piano to relax and unwind before bed 🎹

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would spend the prize money making an experiment to show how icebergs melt around Greenland. This would involve getting a big water tank, food dye, ice cubes and lots of salt. I would then love to take this experiment around different schools and shows to talk to people about the kind of things I model on a computer. I have done this experiment before at a show, but I would love to upscale!

Work History:
Technical Assistant (Trainee Patent Attorney), D Young and Co, 2021-2022
After I graduated with my Master’s degree, I spent a year working in a law firm training to be a patent lawyer. (If you invent something new, a patent gives you the right to stop other people from copying your new invention.) My job involved arguing why an invention deserved to get a patent.
