About Me:
I live in a little studio flat and work from home. In the day, I am a nutrition researcher and in my spare time, I’m still a bit of nerd, I love reading about health, lifting heavy weight and going on woodland walks, sprinkled with a bit of heavy metal music!

I love nature and being outdoors, especially in woodlands and early morning walks to see the sunrise! I love my little cat, Willow too!
I love the gym and weightlifting, trying to get stronger and add some muscle
I also love melodic death and Viking metal!
I love (trying) to grow my own plants – I am getting better with time, practice makes perfect as they say 😉
I enjoy making nutritious meals and experimenting with recipes, they don’t always work out, but a little trial and error does no harm.

You may think of a typical scientist doing lab work, which is true! Although, there are other forms of research. I do what is termed “epidemiology” which involves analysing predictors of health in a specific population. This means my work takes place largely at my computer, in the comfort of my own home, which works really well for me.
I get to manage my own time and also save time by not travelling into an office – which I also love!
Even though I work a lot with numbers, and statistics looks scary – it’s really not and I was not a fan of maths at school and sixth form, so don’t let that put you off! The computer does that part!

My Typical Day:
I do love a routine!
I wake up at 6am and start my day with some mindfulness and gentle stretches before setting out to see the sunrise. I like the quite and stillness in the mornings!
I then get my breakfast at 8am (usually a smoothie and seeds) and do a little brain dump where I write down all the things on my mind and make a plan for the day. I then turn on my laptop and get analysing data for a few hours.
At 11am I meet my boyfriend and we go to the gym to lift weights. I really enjoy the freedom of my job that I can break my day up like this. I come back and get a tasty lunch to refuel before starting back on my work for another few hours.
My boyfriend works through the night, so I spend an hour with him before he leaves for bed at 5pm. I get my dinner and do another couple of hours of work in the evening.

What I'd do with the prize money:
If I won the prize money I would use it to attend further training on public engagement, such as presenting to the public, instead of academics. I would also attend conferences to present my work and practice my presentation skills – even though I do a lot of presentations, there is always room for improvement!

Education:
I started my education at a Primary School back in my home town, St.Patrick’s and continued to Secondary School – St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic High School. At Secondary School my optional subjects were Spanish, Graphics Design and Art and of course, Biology was my favourite mandatory subject, but always struggled learning about the heart for some reason!
I then continued at Sixth Form completing English Lit and Language at AS and dropped this in the next year, but continued with Art, Chemistry and Biology. Again, Biology was my favourite, along with Art.
I then moved to Newcastle to start University. I completed a Zoology degree, followed by a Masters in Animal Behaviour. I really enjoyed a module in that Masters degree that focused on Exercise in Health and Disease, and that’s when the transition started from animals to humans.
I then embarked on my PhD which had another Masters connected to it, in Musculoskeletal Ageing, and then the 3 year PhD in Nutrition and Musculoskeletal Ageing, also fuelled by my love of the gym!

Work History:
My first job was at a Wildlife Park where I was a Cafe Assistant. I gained this role through volunteering at the zoo as a zoo keeper during my work experience in Secondary School.
I then did a LOT of volunteering at University which was really varied such as tree planting, litter picking and making hedgehog homes.
I also worked for the University as a representative, showing prospective students and their parents around the University and answering questions.
I completed a research scholarship during the 2nd year of my undergraduate degree, looking at nutrition in honey bees, again fuelling my interest for health and nutrition, and then was offered a short term job for a few months in the lab before they moved down to Oxford University.
During my PhD I worked as a demonstrator where I helped lecturers either present seminars, set up laboratory sessions or mark students work. I also got involved in other projects, such as helping with research trials.

What did you want to be after you left school?
Oooh, I volunteered in a zoo at the time, I probably wanted to do something related to conservation, or be a researcher!
Were you ever in trouble at school?
A couple of times, despite being teacher's pet in most cases! Once was for laughing too much with my friend and another time for an incidence with the music teacher's slippers!
If you weren't doing this job, what would you choose instead?
I'd probably look into being a nutritional therapist or maybe even something creative??
Who is your favourite singer or band?
Insomnium or Amon Amarth or Powerwolf
What's your favourite food?
I love king prawns or raspberries or Nutella
If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!
To improve my mindset, to have optimal health, to be magic ;)
Tell us a joke.
I'm the worst at them haha. Why did the fibre go to the party? It wanted to help everyone stay regular! 🎉
