About Me:
Travelling physicist that likes to figure out what subatomic particles are all about. Massive foodie and outdoors enthusiast. Ask me about cool bass lines.

Born and raised in Romania, studied in the UK, lived for a few years in Switzerland. Now living in the Netherlands and working in Germany.
Love finding excuses to travel and shamelessly stealing recipes from wherever I go.
Often go cycling in the woods around where I live (ironically I picked up the hobby whilst I was locked down in London).

My Work:
High-energy experimental physicist working on the LHCb experiment at CERN.

CERN is the biggest lab in the world. One of the experiments happening there is LHCb. It’s very good at studying all sorts of particles that are the building blocks of matter (and antimatter). I look at the data taken by LHCb to make measurements that help us figure out things about these particles.

My Typical Day:
I wake up and have something to eat, and coffee (important). I cycle to the office and work on my computer. If it’s Wednesday, I spend the afternoon teaching. I go home in the evening.

I like to cycle to my office (only takes 10 minutes) because it’s good workout and the views are nice.
Most of my work happens over the computer. I write a lot of code. I also have meetings where I discuss work stuff with my colleagues.
Every Wednesday I teach physics labs to second-year students. It’s good fun!
I go home after I’m done for the day and cook a nice dinner.

What I'd do with the prize money:
Invest in a 3D printer with which to make miniatures such as detector components
-
Education:
I studied at a local high-school in Romania.
Then I studied particle physics & cosmology at University of Birmingham. I really wanted to study the subject and I very much enjoyed studying for this degree!
Afterwards I got my PhD in physics from Imperial College London. I learned so many cool things! This was important for me to become a good physicist.
Since then I’ve been working as a reasearcher at RWTH University in Aachen, Germany.

Qualifications:
Romanian baccalaureate
MSci Physics with Particle Physics & Cosmology
PhD in Physics

Work History:
Teaching:
2020-2021: Demonstrator, 17 students, Computational physics (advanced third-year module that
covers numerical methods for solving various challenges frequently faced by physicists)
Responsibilities included demonstrating during weekly sessions and marking.
2019-2020: Teaching assistant, two groups of 15, Statistics of measurements & article writing
(module that introduces second-year students to statistics and good writing practices)
Responsibilities included teaching in weekly tutorials and marking.Voluntary work:
2019: LHCb underground guide: I led tours of the LHCb detector, together with its control
room and data centre. Groups typically consisted of 10 members of the general public.
2018: LHCb masterclass demonstrator: I engaged students in an interactive exercise that used
LHCb data to showcase how measurements are performed in particle physics.
2016-2017: Student ambassador of the School of Physics & Astronomy: I led sessions with prospective
students and their parents, in which I described my life at the University of Birmingham.
This was done during campus tours and open days, where I also gave physics demonstrations.
2015-2017: Student representative: I was elected by my student cohort to represent them in weekly
meetings where staff and students collaborated to improve the university experience. -
Current Job:
2022-2025: Postdoctoral researcher

My Interview
-
What did you want to be after you left school?
A particle physicist! I read a lot of books in my free time and fell in love with the subject
Were you ever in trouble at school?
Well, we did mess around a bit but never caused any serious trouble.
If you weren't doing this job, what would you choose instead?
I would probably be a full-time teacher or tutor
Who is your favourite singer or band?
Oh I can't pick favourites, there are many bands and singers that I love!
What's your favourite food?
The one my mum makes :)
If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!
I would just wish for infinitely-many wishes haha. The other two I'd use to make sure I can wish for infinitely-many wishes, in case the genie is mean
Tell us a joke.
Deliver yesterday, code today, think tomorrow.
