On one level curiosity; the comfort of understanding; the delight of discovery; wonder and awe at the beauty and majesty of nature; because I enjoy how it helps me look at the world; and because it contributes towards what, to me, makes up happiness.

On the other hand it’s warm, dry, indoors, relatively well paid, has good chance of keeping me occupied until retirement. And after many years of practice I’m passable at it. It allows me to do at least some of the other things I want to do in life without causing too much trouble or concern.

I’m curious, I was good at it when I was young and so good good grades which motivated me, and I like the scientific way of thinking about problems.
