Just after the Big Bang the Universe was just a hot soup of particles. Shortly after this the first elements were formed, and then atoms. It was only fairly late on in the expansion of the universe that these molecules started to clump together under gravity to form small rocks, which also clumped together to form larger rocks and eventually planets!
