I think this depends on what science career you want to do. It is really important that you do research into the different paths that are available and decide which one is best for you. Have a chat with people who have taken different routes in their science career and ask for their opinions so you can make an informed decision. There is no right or wrong way, just what is right for you.

The academic route isn’t the only way to get into a science career. As mentioned, it’s important to think about which career options you are interested in and what you need to do to achieve that career path. I always recommend chatting to as many people as you can about different careers in science and that can help you get an idea of what things you are interested in. Look out for opportunities to do work experience can give you an idea of what you like and don’t like. If you aren’t sure then you don’t always have to jump straight into academia out of school, you can always come back to it.
