From what we can tell with studying how the plates of the Earth move, North and South America were once part of a really large continent called Pangea. As the plates moved more, the different bits separated. So different bits of land formed the North and the South.
They were created by the movement of the surface of the earth – the surface of the earth is covered by large chunks of rocky crust called ‘plates’ that lay on top of hotter and more liquid-like rocks called the mantle. The plates move over a very long time and carry any land that lays on top along with them so continents can get ripped apart or slammed together. The shapes of North and South America follow the lines of the plate boundaries when they were pulled apart from Africa and Eurasia over the course of about 100 million years – it’s still quite easy to see where Africa would have fit between the two if you look at the globe!
