Vaquitas have historically declined as a result of bycatch in which the porpoises have been caught / entangled in the nets used for fishing in the region
Vaquitas are under threat due to biological resource use. They are sadly a casualty of the fishing trade, getting caught up in nets as “bycatch” (being caught accidentally/tangled up in fishing nets).
With a population of less than 20 adult individuals, they are classed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List. The Red List holds a lot of information about all kinds of living things and if you’re interested in finding out more, it’s worth a look: https://www.iucnredlist.org
