At school, I found English hard because in my opinion you just had to listen to someone and remember it all – I much preferred maths and science where I could work out answers rather than memorise

The subject I struggled most with was English. Many of the texts we used were dull or obscure or just taught badly. It’s hard to consider something great literature when you’ve gone through it line by line until all the joy and excitement of it has been sucked dry. Having a Lewisian teacher who was a great fan of obscure Lewisian poets but couldn’t explain why didn’t help.
The most frustrating was history. Months of discussing Enclosure Acts and Agricultural Reform Acts. Week after week of nothing but hedges, and all at the same time when the Enlightentment was kicking off, a new world war started every other year and a revolution or rebellion every third, Science was accelerating, Industrialisation was transforming the country, trade was turning to conquest Everything Was On Fire…..and I was supposed to be enthused by learning about the impact of planting hedges on the village economy, urban plan and the relative social position of it’s inhabitants.
