The worst scans are where you unexpectedly come across cancers that have spread and are unlikely to be treatable. This is particularly difficult if you have the patient in front of you (ultrasound) and you can’t help thinking bad news is written all over your face. I have less patient contact in my job now than I used to, but the findings have not changed. The type of cancer is very important and that is not always clear from the imaging – actual samples (histology) is needed to determine the cancer’s type and grade (how aggressive it is).
