• Question: what is your favourite marine creature you have worked with so far?

      Sadly I only work with animals once they are dead, so its not a great start. But I have worked with samples from two famous scottish marine mammals: Lulu the killer whale, and Spike the bottlenose dolphin. It was great to hear about how many people had spotted them on their walks, whale/dolphin watching, and how much we knew about them, before they stranded.

    I love Orcas. I once had a three-month long project studying and classifying photographs of orcas to try and help fishing fleets identify the biggest annoyances when they were trying to draw their lines in – the whales were snacking on the fish and it was costing the fleets a lot of time! They are incredibly smart, to the extent that trying to trick the whales with dummy fishing lines did not even work.
