• Question: What is something you dislike about your job? And is there any disadvantages to it.

      I dislike doing lots of paperwork, but I can usually plan this effectively so it doesn’t all happen in one big chunk, I can add it in around the work I enjoy (being in the lab). I don’t think there are any disadvantages, it’s more making sure you prioritise what’s important and don’t spend too much time swept up in the little tasks that are less beneficial.

      I really hate doing administrative work… I know it has to be done but always try to put it off as long as possible as I don’t see the point in some of it!

    That is a great question, as all jobs definitely have this – when I worked in a supermarket it was racking the chickens for the oven… In science and working at a university my least favourite thing is navigating admin. Things like booking international travel or hiring summer interns need a level of regulation but it is sometimes hard to know who to go to and which form is the correct one. With regards to disadvantages, it is a lot of work but the hours are mostly flexible as long as the work gets done (e.g., I can work weekends to finish marking scripts but then take off a Monday morning).

    I really don’t like doing paperwork and, in my position as a professor, I really can’t avoid paperwork. I can only put off doing it!
