  The DNA is made up of two complimentary nucleotide strands coming together in the form of a twisted double helix. The two strands are held together by hydrogen bonds between the base pairs. You can imagine the DNA as a twisted ladder with the base pairs being the ‘steps’ or ‘rungs’ of the ladder.
