My favourite job so far is the one I am in. I like working in a team towards a common goal, I like using my chemistry knowledge but not being based in the lab (I like the people in the lab, not the actual experiments I realised), I like that I get to travel with work to interesting places but it’s not every week. I get to meet and work with lots of scientists, researchers and educators and that is the favourite part of my job, getting to meet new people and learn about what science they are doing or learning about.

My favourite job so far as a marine biologist working with algae has been to grow it! My cultures are in flasks with their media (growth fluid) at the moment, and I love making sure they get bigger!

My favorite was also one of the shorter ones. It might be one of my favorites because of it. In the weeks before harvest during the univeristy summer holidays I would work with my Dad roguing the oats out of the wheat and barley crops. To spend the summer days and better, the summer evenings walking the fields beneath the Lammermuirs in the company of nature, my Dad and, one time, a couple of passing Spitfires, were the best times, though also the worst paid job I’ve ever had (agricultural minimum rates). Not something I’d like have liked to do permanently, but for a few weeks a year in my youth, bliss.

I was once part of a large team that was working on the software for a new build chemical plant. That has been my favourite job so far, getting to work with such a big team was amazing and alot of fun.

My current job at Thermo Fisher is basically my dream role – and I’m not just saying that! 🔬

      Why it’s awesome:
      • I get to develop scientific instruments that help researchers make incredible discoveries
      • Every day is different – sometimes I’m designing new tools, other times I’m solving complex technical puzzles
      • I work with amazing teams who are just as curious about the world as I am
      • Our work could potentially help solve massive global challenges like developing better solar panels or more efficient batteries

The best part? I’m not just collecting data. I’m creating tools that help other brilliant minds make discoveries that could transform how we live.

My previous roles were great learning experiences, but this feels like where all my curiosity and problem-solving skills truly come together. From taking apart electronics as a kid to now designing instruments that can see things thousands of times smaller than a human hair – it’s like my entire scientific journey has been leading to this.

Some days I’m in meetings with global teams, other days I’m in the lab troubleshooting a prototype. Sometimes things go perfectly, sometimes they go hilariously wrong (pro tip: always wear safety glasses! 😄).

Science isn’t just a job for me. It’s a way of understanding the world, solving puzzles, and potentially making things better. And right now, I’m exactly where I want to be.
