It depends on the type of sealife! For seaweeds and microalgae (really, really tiny seaweeds), we heat them up and put them under lots of pressure to make sure they are dead before we just throw that back into the water system. For small animals, such as sea urchins and sea lice, the process is different depending on if the organism is native to the area or not. However, they are usually frozen, then the dead creatures undergo the same heat/pressure treatment before being sent to biological disposal centres. For larger animals such as seals, dolphins, and turtles, the bodies are collected and sent to specific researchers for them to identify, study and learn more about the species they have found.
