8/10, to research and engaging with students and people around me about my research. 2 points taken as I wish to have more time for my children. Sometimes my research takes me to exciting places like synchrotron facilities however children cannot be on site.
There is no such thing as a perfect job… but this one is pretty good. I’ll give it 8 out of 10 🙂
+ Love working with super clever, brilliant people
+ Love science
+ Our site is really nice
+ Love that we do a lot of volunteering with schools and other programmes
I’m not giving it a 9 because I’ve been doing this for 3 years and I think it’s time for a change!
I would rate my PhD a 9/10. I absolutely love coming into work and thinking about supermassive black holes all the time. Everyone in my department is very excited about science and I have so many interesting conversations with professors and other students. I haven’t given it a 10/10 because we don’t get paid much as PhD students so we have to live with pretty tight budgets.
I would rate being a veterinary researcher 10/10, I really enjoy it! I couldn’t do the job I do now if I hadn’t been a clinical vet first, as the skills I learned as a clinical vet were required for me to start out in doing field research. For me, being a clinical vet was a lower score because I realised that rather than fixing the problem once it’s happening, when the animal is unwell, the owner is stressed about their animal being unwell and, sometimes, all of this is happening in the middle of the night when it’s more difficult to fix, what I enjoy more is finding out how to give animal owners advice to prevent a problem from happening. Some vets absolutely love doing the emergency fixing a problem aspect of the job, so they would likely rate being a clinical vet higher than I do!
