We didn’t really evolve *from* the monkeys that are around today; they’re more like our siblings than our parents! These monkeys and us trace back to the same ancestors a few million years ago if you build a kind of species family tree. Over time some of the monkey ancestors would have changed, maybe because they were in a different environment or they got separated from the others, and some would change so much that they were now a new species compared to the others and made up a new branch in our family tree. At some point one of these groups that made a new branch went on to be humans as we are today.
