hi ideally a person should not eat too many snacks, I don’t have a number. There are healthier snacks that a person can have in between their main meals like fruit, a Greek yoghurt pot, chocolate-covered raisins, and lentil crisps. These kinds of snacks are better for a person. If a person likes unhealthy snacks, a person can still have them but they can think of what they can add to make it better for them. For example, if they want to have some chocolate, they can add some almonds 🙂
try to add fruits, veg, nuts and or dairy (milk or yoghurt) to meals when having snacks
This can vary depending on the individual, their activity levels, stage of life, or conditions. For example, an older adult with a lower appetite might find it easier to eat lots of smaller meals, than 3 bigger meals. An athlete may have more snacks if they are training intensely. Children may also require more snacks to help provide their bodies with energy to grow.
Some people may have no snacks, and have 3 main meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), others may have more. It is good to leave some time between meals (approx 2-5 hours) to help your stomach digest the food and also promote good oral health.
It’s important to have a balanced diet to get the carbohydrates, protein, fats, fibre and nutrients we need to keep our bodies running well. If we are having snacks, we need to account for this and make sure we’re not getting too much of one thing and not enough of others. Snacks are often high sugar and high fat so we need to think about whether our other meals can be less sugary or fatty to account for this.
Some people like to have several smaller food portions through the day compared to the ‘standard’ breakfast, lunch and dinner!
