We have taken a lot from the planet to build everything that we need to develop, planes, cars, phones etc, however we have dumped our rubbish into it or in some cases burn it. We are very wasteful. We are also using chemicals that get into our water and environment and we don’t really need to use them.
Spending time as a vet in low income countries where millions of people rely on animals to earn their living or to get their children to school or to access water has helped me to appreciate the concept of ‘one health’ where the health of people, animals and the planet are directly connected (and widen to ‘one welfare’ where we consider well being beyond purely health). Overall we’re blessed to live in a country where we can take for granted being able to turn on the tap and get clean water to drink and to keep clean, have electricity to light and heat our home, travel to school/work on readily available transport (albeit expensive and potentially polluting) and we can forget that there are many millions of people who don’t have those things which we take for granted.
