Geography and business can be linked in many ways. On a local scale, city planners need geography to make sure the people in the city have shops and facilities they need. Unfortunately, all earthquake, flood and volcano hazard planning will depend on a region or country’s finances. And all research projects I do have to have a budget that I calculate.
Geography can be relevant to business in lots of ways. If you are doing business with people in different countries, it can help to understand the world they live in. Details like is the population higher or lower there, how is it spread out, do they have the same kind of big cities that we have, are some places hard to get to because of geography like mountainous areas, does their geography mean they have different types of energy sources like geothermal, can all help you develop business solutions that suit possible customers in other parts of the world.
In my field of nuclear safety engineering, geography is relevant to understanding natural hazards like tsunamis or earthquakes, or predicting how an accidental release of radioactive material might travel in air or water to affect people. You might think there is no risk of tsunamis in the UK, but in fact there is a small possibility of a huge tsunami starting at Gran Canaria thousands of miles away which could affect southern UK.
