It is not so much that you loose cells in cancer. It is more that cells that used to work normally suddenly start misbehaving. We need to get rid of these bad cells before they go onto make the rest of the cells bad too. The immune system is the body’s army. So, it can help get rid of the bad cells.
Cancer actually results in an increase of cells. But the treatment kills cancer cells and sometimes healthy cells. The immune system can detect a protein called an antigen on the cancer cells and can release enzymes that digest the cell, or release signals that force the cancer cell to die (apoptosis). However, sometimes the cancer cell is clever and uses an antigen that the immune system thinks is “normal”.
