Lots of analysis! We started by working out exactly how much heat will be generated by the cameras and motors inside, and what temperature we wanted everything to be. That let us work out what insulation to use and what size of cooler to buy. Then we built prototypes of parts (like a single wall) to check that everything worked like we expected. Most of the challenge was actually designing the insulated enclosure in a way that allowed really good access to the parts inside in case they break, basically every wall is made of removable panels.
