They land on the ‘trap’ bit because they smell something sweet, nectar produced by the venus fly trap. The venus fly trap has a few ‘trigger hairs’ on each half of the trap, which the fly will bump while it walks around. Once it’s hit two, the venus fly trap snaps shut, which catches the fly!
The really cool bit (like that isn’t already cool!) is that once it’s mostly shut, the trap slows down, giving time for any super tiny not-worth-it bugs to escape through the venus fly trap’s ‘teeth.’ That way the plant only spends the time and energy to digest the bigger, more valuable bugs!
(too-big bugs will also escape during that slow period, which helps the venus fly trap avoid getting damaged)
