I studied maths and physics at university and went on to do a masters in astronomy. I really enjoyed research so decided to do a PhD in astronomy.
After this, I applied to universities to continue doing research and am now at Newcastle University 🙂
I had put my details on an agency website and they called me to interview for a temporary job (maternity cover) even though I had specified a different geographical area. I wasn’t actively looking for a job at that time, since I was still finishing my PhD, but it was a good opportunity to take up.
The temporary job turned into a permanent job, as a vacancy opened up once I was there. It’s worth taking up temporary roles if you are able, since you never know where it will lead.
I had previously worked with my current supervisor/boss so was made aware of the opportunity through him.
I then submitted an application that included a CV and a personal statement that explained why I wanted to do the job and why I thought I was a good fit for the project.
