Great question! Because I believe every kid deserves a chance to explore and learn, regardless of what challenges they’re dealing with.
Growing up, I saw how some kids got left out of a bunch of stuff – scientific or otherwise – and it wasn’t because they couldn’t understand, but rather that nobody was taking the time to make things accessible. It doesn’t matter who you are, or what you can do, getting sidelined suuucks.
Volunteering with Whoopsadaisy lets me help kids develop skills in a way that’s actually fun. We’re not about feeling sorry for anyone – we’re about figuring out how to make learning work for them. Sometimes that means adapting an activity, sometimes it means trying something totally different.
Science should be for everyone. Not as some inspirational poster thing, but as a real, practical way of understanding the world. These kids are just as curious, just as smart (some of the smartest I’ve ever met in some cases!) – they just might need things explained or demonstrated differently.
For me, it’s about creating spaces where kids can be curious, ask questions, and explore – without anyone making them feel different or less capable.
Plus, to be totally honest? These kids teach me way more than I ever teach them. Their problem-solving skills and creativity constantly blow me away. Every session is an absolute giggle-fest π
