Question: Does diseases and viruses pose a massive threat for scientist in the future and if so how are you guys going to respond to them and face challenges like global pandemics
I definitely think microbes can pose a serious threat to the human race. Even more so considering all the false information that can easily be spread across social media. I think scientists need to engage with the community and answer questions without any judgement. It will take a long time to build/rebuild trust with some people but behaving appropriately, and following guidance and advice is key. But I think it all starts with effective communication from scientists.
I agree with Hayley in that microbes can seriously threaten the human race. Some of the most dangerous diseases are ones which can spread from animals to humans (called zoonoses) – more than half of the newly discovered diseases can do this. The disease may not be detected in the animals and then by the time it spreads to humans it’s already well established and much more difficult to control. Examples of zoonses include Covid-19, avian influenza and rabies.
