Day to day, I enjoy football the most—whether I’m playing or watching, there’s nearly always something exciting going on. The gym’s great too, but it’s more of a routine, while football is more fun, unpredictable, and social. The weekends are much more boring over the summer when there’s no football…
Researching physics, though, is very different. It’s slower, but it’s all about the big questions—like what reality is made of and how the universe really works, and that’s what I find really interesting. So if I could only do one for the rest of my life, I’d probably choose physics.
I like watching women’s football, so I’m enjoying the Euros at the moment (although not so much the penalty kicks…..) but I’ve never been a football player myself. At school I preferred maths over physics, probably because I had a really good maths teacher who made it interesting and I especially liked pure maths. As a vet maths is useful for understanding statistics which I used when I’m doing research, whereas physics is useful for understanding things like how an MRI machine works and how to understand the images it produces. Going to the gym is great, rather than doing weights or spin I like Reformer Pilates classes, which I find mentally challenging as well as being a good full body workout with good trainers. The classes are also a good laugh with the other people in the class too when we’re all moaning at the trainers for designing impossible new kinds of exercises for us! Apparently some of the professional football teams include regular reformer pilates classes as part of their training regimes – I think Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham are also fans of it.
