I do know several people, mainly from my collaboration, that are well known around CERN, but I’m not sure how famous they are to the general public; so generally I don’t know. One person you might know is my colleague Harry Cliff, he’s written lovely books on the subject of particle physics. I highly recommend them, he’s got a great way of explaining challenging topics. One of the chapters in his book Space Oddities talks about the subject of my PhD thesis!
No, but a friend of mine does know someone who works there!
My point is that CERN is staffed by ambitious but ordinary people. Aspiring to be involved is maybe not as out of sight as you might imagine.
My son is badgering me to do an Open University course in Planetary Science; on the basis that I might meet Brian Cox. It could happen. The course would be interesting in any case.
