Not that I’m aware of, I’ve never been assessed but any autistic traits I have don’t impact my life in any way that would make me seek out a diagnosis. It’s quite common to be neurodivergent in one way or another in science though, having a brain that works a little differently is quite useful for this kind of work!

I do not, but I know someone who is in my department and we chat every once in a while!

They’re really good at what they do and an expert in their field.

Yes, I’m autistic. 🧠 It’s a big part of who I am, and it actually helps me be a better scientist! Autism means my brain works a little differently – I’m really good at focusing on details, spotting patterns, and understanding complex systems. Those are basically superpowers in surface analysis, where we’re looking at materials at the atomic level. Science needs all kinds of minds, and different ways of thinking are what lead to breakthroughs. So, being autistic isn’t something I need to ‘overcome’ – it’s something I embrace!
