I had lots of interests before I wanted to do science yes! I used to do a lot of dance when I was younger and I wanted to be a dancer, but then I fell in love with science and chose that instead.
I still love dancing and have lots of interests outside of science that I do in my free time – such as reading, running and fitness, crochet and dancing 🙂
As a child, I loved fashion design and product design though my unsteady hands didn’t make me the best candidate. Technology has actually helped me greatly in getting back into this!
For me it always was and still is history. When I was 6-7 I lived in a cottage in the grounds of Caerlaverock Castle
(https://www.historicenvironment.scot/visit-a-place/places/caerlaverock-castle/overview/),
the castle grounds becoming my playground when the castle had shut for the day and the last of the visitors had left. It had a marked effect on my development. I found the history taught in school rather unsatisfying, so went down a different route, but the love of history has never left me.
I cannot remember a time before I was interested in how things worked. Actually I have become more interested in history, literature and photography as I have got older. I still read a lot about science fields I have no professional involvement in though.
I’ve always loved being active, whether doing indoor sports such as gymnastics or trampolining or being active outdoors going out walking, enjoying nature, horse riding. When I broke my leg badly in a horse riding accident a few years ago and wasn’t able to work or go out for several weeks my partner bought me a book of British birds and put up a bird table in our garden so that I could identify all the different birds coming in to feed (as well as a few other animals who were also trying their luck when birds dropped bits on the ground) During that time I got interested in photography, I’m not very good but I love playing with a camera to try to capture wildlife photos.
