My Work:
I am completing the Scientist Training Programme in Clinical Bioinformatics. Clinical Bioinformatics is the application of computer science to human health.
Within the NHS bioinformaticians support patients by identifying DNA changes through software. These DNA changes are responsible for many disease and can cause cancers.

I work developing the software the finds DNA changes that cause diseases and cancers. DNA is processed in huge files from which we analyse small changes that can have big impacts.
Programming safe code and ensuring that results are accurate and reliable is of great importance in this field.

My Typical Day:
I wake up at 7:30, have cereal and instant coffee and start work at 9am. I work remotely 3-4 days a week which saves time commuting. My mornings are spent in-front of the computer, developing and troubleshooting software to produce data or process patient samples. Lunch is either something nice at home or an average jacket potato at the hospital. I working until 5:30pm.
After work I go to the gym and try to do some studying/cooking at home.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would use the money to go to conferences to learn more about how to apply bioinformatics to improve patient health.
-
Education:
I went to high-school in Italy in a scientific school.I then did a MEng in Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College London.
As part of my Contract now I have recently completed an MSc in Bioinformatics.
