I have always been a curious individual, be it in school or in my personal life. Always up to try something new and challenge my comfort zone a little! I did not always want to be a scientist. Although, now I have two science degrees and working towards my third one. In my free time, I love exploring Edinburgh by trying out different experiences, be it a new yoga class or a new cuisine in town.

My Work:
You know how the traffic lights tell us when to stop and when to go, my work is trying to help doctors administer the right drug to the right patient specifically cancer patients.

If you would like to know more about my work, google “precision medicine” – that is the exact area that I work within. In simple words, it means that a single drug cannot be suited for everyone. Each of us are different, even genetically, and so we respond differently to drugs especially if we have complicated diseases like cancer. So my work is trying to find any indicators that can help us understand and administer cancer drugs to cancer patients more efficiently.

My Typical Day:
I wake up and have breakfast (absolute must for me). I get to work at around 8.30 – 9 am where I plan out my day before starting anthing. On some days, I do experiments in the lab and on others I try to get my code to work on my computer. I have lunch between 12 – 1 pm. I try to get whatever I have planned for the day done by 4 pm (not always successful at that). I then head to the gym before I head home.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would like to organise a science cafe session where I gather scientists from different fields for a Q&A session that can be attended by high school students.
-
Education:
I did my IGCSEs and IB Diploma degree in a high school in Jakarta, Indonesia. I then completed my bachleor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences at Newcastle University. I also did my master’s degree in cancer research at Newcastle University. I am currently pursuing my PhD in Genetics and Molecular Medicine at University of Edinburgh.
-
Qualifications:
I have done the IGCSEs and IB Diploma programme in school. Both these programmes helped me develop as a holistic student. I then went and did a Biomedical Sciences degree in school which helped me develop laboratory skills and knowledge to pursue a career as a researcher. It also helped to realise that I would like to work in the field of cancer research. I wanted to develop more skills in the lab so I did a Masters of Research in Cancer.
-
Work History:
I have worked as research intern within a genetics lab where I learnt how to perform different types of laboratory techniques and computational skills. I have also worked as a research analyst where I did secondary research which basically means that I read things online to better understand the market/product that I was researching about. Both these roles have helped me develop a unique set of skills that help me as a scientist.

Current Job:
I am currently a PhD student.
