      oooo…that’s a philosophical question!

Science is important because it allows us to understand things that previously we wouldn’t have thought were possible to understand. Science doesn’t just sit in a laboratory wearing a white coat, science is trying things out in the real world, science is understanding people, the planet, and the universe, but also understanding the things that we can’t see. Science helps us remain curious, rather than just saying “ok, well i guess that’s just how it is”, we go “ok, so this is how much we know about this right now – lets see what else we DON’T know yet”. It encourages curiosity and ensures progress and prevents things becoming static.

There are several reasons that science is so important and increasingly important in the current age:

      (1) Science is creative. It inspires people driven by their curiosity to explore, create and innovate. It addresses the desire within people to go beyond what they know and perceive.

      (2) Science helps us understand how the world around us and the universe beyond work. If we understand how it works then we can take steps to correct problems that we as a species may have created. A good example of this is ozone depletion and the use of chlorofluorocarbons. We understood the chemistry and these compounds were banned. An even more crucial example is that of global warming. We know how it happens and what steps must be take to ensure that this planet remains viable for life.

      (3) Science underpins technology and so there is a pipeline of discovery from the lab to the store on the high street. Without science there can be no technological innovation and our society will stagnate.

We have 3 fundamental needs in order to survive: food, clothing and shelter. Without them, we will not survive. To guarantee continued access to them, we need to understand where and how they occur in the material world. From our need for food comes the need to know about plants and animals, where they occur and how to cope with seasons of plenty versus seasons of scarcity. From our need for clothing comes the need to know how to adapt skins and plant fibres for our use. From the need for shelter comes the need to know how to find and then use wood, mud, clay, stone and metals. In other words, we need a lot of knowledge just to survive. And science, after all, comes from the Latin word scientia, which simply means…knowledge. Over the millenia, mankind’s knowledge of what it takes to survive has become organised into what we call science: chemistry, physics, geology, biology and maths. Without science, then, we wouldn’t survive! Does that answer your Q why is science so important?
