I’m not sure, and I don’t know if we know. I believe I’ve heard it may be a way to help our brains process/store the previous day’s memories.

I read ‘Incognito’ by David Eagleman and in it, he says that one of the theories is that all our senses fight to stay alive. Since we spend about 8 hours without vision when we’re asleep, dreaming might be a way for our vision to stay alive/active.
